We’re Flyweight, a software startup from Mannheim, Germany. We build AI that understands your products, helps your customers and takes work off your team’s hands. We like making software that earns its place in your working day.
We know e-commerce from running our own brand and online store. Today, we bring that experience to the software and automation we build for brands on Shopify.
Our principle
We skipped the separate sales team. You have one dedicated contact on our team with hands-on software development experience.
Three developers with plenty of ideas and a shared ambition.
Marc, Matthias and Christian met more than 13 years ago while studying business informatics alongside their jobs. They shared a love of building software and a curiosity about how much easier it could make everyday work.
Alongside careers in finance and at BASF, they spent their spare time on their own projects. There was plenty of enthusiasm and learning, but little financial success at first. In 2018, they founded Flyweight with a clear idea: build a data-driven e-commerce business, automate as much as possible and turn it into their full-time work.
2018 to 2021
Before we built software for stores, we ran one ourselves.
Our brand Monte Stivo sold more than 100,000 children’s binoculars and reached around €3 million in annual revenue. Making that work alongside jobs and studies meant putting automation at the heart of the business from the start.
Running Monte Stivo taught us what goes into an online store every day. We saw firsthand how much difference useful software can make.
We sold Monte Stivo in mid-2021. We had always agreed that, if the opportunity came, we would take it and build a software company. Developing products and automating work is what we know best and enjoy most.
From our own Shopify store to Flyweight AI.
Before the sale in 2021
Our own store is the starting point.
Inspired by Christian’s master’s thesis, we start experimenting with graph databases before selling Monte Stivo. Our own Shopify store is the first data source we connect. We want to link data in a way that makes its relationships useful in everyday work.
2022 and 2023
ChatGPT sparks a new idea.
At first, we work on a central system that connects business data. The technology is promising, but demand is limited. ChatGPT sparks a new idea: what if we combine an LLM’s language skills with the connected knowledge in our graph? That idea becomes Flyweight AI.
Early 2025
Flyweight AI goes live.
After around three years of development, we launch a solution built specifically for Shopify. Our Knowledge Graph makes a brand’s knowledge available to the AI, helping it answer more accurately and understand how things connect. It also provides the foundation for AI agents that handle tasks across the store and connected systems. Since launch, more than 800 brands on Shopify have chosen Flyweight.
